Federal Funding Initiative

The National Bernstein Network Computational Neuroscience Germany (NNCN) was established in 2004 by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research with the aim of structurally interconnecting and developing regional capacities and knowledge in the field of computational neuroscience. It combined neuroscientific expertise with theoretical approaches.

By launching multiple Bernstein funding lines, the network constantly expanded. It not only expanded area-wise,  the spectrum of research methods and themes broadened, too. The Bernstein Centers for Computational Neuroscience were the core elements from the start. Collaborations between experimental and theoretical research groups were continuously supported (e.g. Bernstein Groups, Bernstein Collaborations) as well as the connection to Industry Partners (e.g. Bernstein Foci). The Bernstein Award gave 10 young researchers the opportunity to build up an independent research group over a period of five years.
